Amicus Attorney is Gavel & Gown Software's time-tested program developed to improve law firm efficiency and profitability and to help legal professionals "get the most out of the time they spend practicing law." Amicus Attorney 7, the company attests, is "the most powerful version of Amicus that we have ever developed. It is absolutely bursting with new enhancements."

This practice management program comes in three flavors:

* The Standard Edition offers a variety of features for single users and small law firms. It can integrate with various law office accounting programs and can link with a number of other legal software tools. The Standard Edition is limited to 15 users and two gigabytes of data. It can be upgraded to the Premium Edition.

* The Premium Edition includes the Standard Edition features plus Internet accessibility, increased security options and customization capabilities, centralized document management and a bidirectional link with Microsoft Outlook which can synchronize Contacts and Calendar information with Outlook or PDA devices. The Premium Edition was designed for both small and large law firms; it can accommodate unlimited users and database sizes.

* Amicus Organizer is for a single user. While it contains all the main modules of Amicus Attorney--Files, Calendar, Contacts, Time Sheets and Library--it can't be linked to other users or to other products. Amicus Organizer can be upgraded to the Standard or Premium Edition.

In a practice management paper presented at ABA TECHSHOW 2005, authors Wells Anderson, David Bilinsky, Dan Pinnington and Natalie Thornwell compared Time Matters to Amicus Attorney. At that time, Amicus Attorney Version V+ had just been released as an upgrade to the traditional Windows line of Amicus Attorney (including the Organizer, Advanced, and Client-Server versions), while Version X was a new version running inside Internet Explorer. In their helpful
paper, they dealt with Version V+, since that version was then being used by the majority of Amicus Attorney customers.

A Gavel & Gown spokesman recently observed: "One thing I can tell you is that Version 7 is based on the best aspects of both V+ and X. (It really does have some of both, plus a bunch of new stuff!). The Web integration, for example, is an extension of X, but much of the core functionality begins with V+. The interface, architecture and much of the integration is new as well. So it's really a 'rethinking' of practice management software with the earlier versions as a starting point."

Installation

My experience installing a 30-day trial version of the Premium Edition was easy and without incident, notwithstanding that it was installed to a Virtual PC on an external USB-linked hard drive. Although a 15-page Install Guide is included with the package, the program itself checked to ensure that the necessary components (e.g., Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1) are available.

New & Improved Features

Amicus Attorney 7 includes a new interface, a new favorites module (which automatically integrates Internet Explorer browser Favorites), new
customization capabilities including custom records, and new search and document management features. There are improved e-mail management and "notes" capabilities as well as workgroup calendars, firm contact cards and document contacts.
